International Scholars Program: Final Reflection

My experience in the International Scholars Program (ISP) at the University of Florida has profoundly shaped my perspective on global and intercultural issues. As a first-generation student and a newly naturalized U.S. citizen, this program provided me with the tools and experiences to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Growing up, my opportunities were limited due to my immigration status, but obtaining American citizenship gave me the freedom to pursue my dreams of traveling and learning from different cultures. The ISP program complemented this newfound freedom by equipping me with the critical thinking and communication skills necessary to engage with diverse global communities effectively.

One of the most transformative aspects of my experience was studying abroad in Italy. Since childhood, I have dreamed of traveling outside the United States, and this program made that dream a reality. Living in Rome allowed me to immerse myself in a culture vastly different from my own, strengthening my adaptability and intercultural competence. I took Italian courses at UF in preparation for my travels, setting a goal to learn at least 60% of the language before graduation. This linguistic preparation, combined with real-world interactions in Italy, enhanced my ability to communicate across cultural barriers. Through my travels, I expanded my cultural awareness, developed empathy, and gained a better understanding of global interdependencies, reinforcing my commitment to being a responsible global citizen.

In addition to my study abroad experience, I participated in research opportunities that deepened my understanding of global issues. My recruitment for a research project in Ecuador was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. The project, focused on data ethics and communication, exposed me to diverse business environments and perspectives. Conducting semi-structured interviews with business owners in Ecuador allowed me to analyze cultural differences in business practices, an experience that solidified my interest in international research and analytics. Furthermore, my participation in Accenture’s Data Analytics & Visualization job simulation equipped me with technical skills in data modeling and analysis, demonstrating how global markets rely on data-driven decision-making.

Despite the enriching experiences, I encountered several challenges, such as language barriers and cultural differences. Traveling alone for the first time and navigating unfamiliar environments tested my resilience and adaptability. However, these challenges only strengthened my confidence and problem-solving abilities. By engaging with local communities and leveraging my language skills, I was able to overcome these obstacles, ultimately fostering deeper connections with people from different backgrounds. These experiences have prepared me to embrace uncertainty and think critically about global issues, skills that will be invaluable in my future academic and professional pursuits.

As I approach graduation, I recognize how my experiences with ISP and global learning will shape my post-graduation plans. My exposure to international research, data analytics, and intercultural communication has inspired me to consider graduate studies in either Statistics or International Business. The skills I have developed through ISP—critical thinking, cultural competence, and effective communication—will be assets in any career path I choose. Moreover, my experiences have reinforced my passion for fostering cross-cultural dialogue and global collaboration. I am eager to continue advocating for international education by participating in study abroad fairs and mentoring students interested in global learning opportunities.

The International Scholars Program has been an integral part of my journey at UF, serving as a catalyst for my personal and professional growth. It has provided me with experiences that have expanded my worldview and strengthened my ability to navigate intercultural spaces. From studying abroad in Italy to conducting research in Ecuador, each experience has contributed to my understanding of global issues and enhanced my ability to communicate across cultures. As I move forward, I am excited to apply these insights to my future endeavors, ensuring that my commitment to international engagement and learning remains a lifelong pursuit.
